Unveiling the Invaluable Role of Libraries:

In an era dominated by digital advancements and instant access to information, the value of libraries may seem to be diminishing for some. However, beneath the surface, these institutions continue to play a crucial role in society, offering far more than just a collection of books. Libraries serve as vibrant community hubs, fostering education, inclusivity, and connection.

In our own community, our library is a focal point for enhancing the livability in Ocean Shores.  In September 2022 marked 50 years since the Ocean Shores Public Library was established. In 1990 Ocean Shores voters approved a bond of $265,000.00 for the new library building.  Then in 2019 the building was remodeled and expanded from 4200 sq. ft. to 5400 sq. ft.

A Haven for Knowledge and Learning

Libraries stand as bastions of knowledge, offering a diverse range of books, periodicals, and reference materials. Beyond the traditional reading materials, modern libraries have adapted to the digital age, providing access to e-books, online databases, and educational resources. This dynamic approach ensures that libraries remain relevant educational spaces for people of all ages.

Bridging the Digital Divide

Despite the proliferation of technology, not everyone has equal access to it. Libraries address this digital divide by providing free internet access and computer facilities. For many, libraries serve as essential gateways to online education, job applications, and staying connected with the digital world. They play a crucial role in leveling the playing field and ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital age. In 2017 our local library expanded to 16 Public Computer Workstations for all ages and in 2018 Book-a-Techie service began.

The Ocean Shores Library has wireless internet access available 6:00 AM – 10:00 PM, 7 days a week. There is no password required to use the wifi. For your safety, make sure your anti-virus software is up to date before using any wireless network.

Community Connection

Libraries are not just about solitary reading; they are vibrant community spaces that bring people together. From book clubs and storytelling sessions for children to workshops, lectures, and cultural events, libraries foster a sense of community. By providing a neutral and welcoming environment, libraries contribute to social cohesion and interaction among diverse groups of people.

Preserving Cultural Heritage & Art

Libraries are custodians of our cultural heritage. They house manuscripts, historical documents, and archives that contribute to the preservation of our collective memory. Through special collections and archives, libraries play a crucial role in maintaining a connection with the past, allowing future generations to understand and appreciate their cultural roots.  Art in the Library is a program sponsored by the Ocean Shores Public Library, which provides display space for works created by Ocean Shores Artists. There is no fee or commission to display the art. The display rotates monthly. Display space is available for two- and three-dimensional art.

Economic Impact

Libraries contribute to the economic well-being of communities by providing resources for job seekers, small business owners, and entrepreneurs. They offer valuable support for research, business planning, and career development, ultimately contributing to local economic growth.

As we navigate an ever-changing world, let us not overlook the enduring significance of libraries in shaping informed, connected, and empowered communities.
